NC States is one month from today, and things are coming together nicely!

The prizes we have this year are WAY beyond anything we've had in the past, thanks to our AMAZING sponsors (and we're still waiting for a few to trickle in)!

NC States 2010

The 4th Annual NC State Yo-Yo Contest will be held from 10am-4pm at the Children's Museum of Winston-Salem (in downtown Winston-Salem, NC) on June 12, 2010. As we did last year, players will compete in five divisions (beginner, sport, fixed axle, 1a fresstyle, and open freestyle).

What are you talking about?
I'm talking about the biggest yo-yo event in the Carolinas! Yo-Yo players of all levels will be learning tons and having a great time at this event!

Where and when, exactly?
The event will take place on Saturday, 6/12/10 (10am-4pm) at the Children's Museum of Winston-Salem.

Who's running it?
The contest organizer this year is Ed Haponik - e-mail me at kinopah@att.net

Who's sponsoring it?
In addition to the Children's Museum of Winston-Salem... several AMAZING yo-yo companies have signed on to provide funds and radical prizes! These include: SPYY, Yoyojam, Yoyoguy.com, Yoyonation.com, YoyoeXpert.com, One Drop YoYos, Caribou Lodge Yoyoworks, HSpin, YoYoFactory, Tim-Cor, String Theory Yo-Yo's, RiceRocket Mods, Eric Wolff, James Buffington, and Barking Spider Entertainment. Who's sanctioning the event?
We have the sanction of the AYYA, and are awaiting word from the NYYL.

Do I have to be like a yo-yo master or something?
NO! ALL ability levels (novice to pro) will have something fun to take from this event.

What divisions will you be having?
We'll have five separate "contests" at this event.

There will be a Sport Ladder, in which players will work their way down a list of tricks (miss 2, and you're out).
There will be a Beginners' Contest with a simplified trick list for novices.
There will also be a Fixed Axle contest for all the "old-schoolers".
We'll also have freestyles in both "1A" and "Open" divisions. These will be judged on the criteria of positive trick elements, negative misses/errors, and performance.
The NC State Champion this year will be determined by results in the 1a and Open division freestyles. The North Carolina player with the highest combined scores in those two divisions will be awarded the state title.
There will also be a Beginners' Corner where established yo-yo players will be assisting novices with some of the basics throughout the day.

What tricks do I need to know for the "Sport Ladder"?
The tricks for both the 1s and 2s ladders are found here.

And if I want to freestyle?
Freestyles in 1a and open will be 2 minutes in length and set to family-friendly music. If your music is obscene in any way (at the discretion of the contest organizer or judges), you may be disqualified. Your music must be either on a CD or iPod.

Can I do ladder AND freestyle?
Nope. If you're doing ladder, you may not perform a freestyle. If you're freestyling, you may not compete in ladder.

How about the fixed axle contest?
Sure. Anyone can do that, but you need a fixed axle yo-yo. No yo-yo changes are allowed.
It will be a trick-list format, run like the 'duncan standard' tourney of old (albeit with some different tricks). you get 3 points for hitting the trick on your 1st try, 1 point for your 2nd try, and if you want you can try a 3rd time 'just for show'.

loop the loop (5 reps)
split the atom (3 somersaults, loop out)
stop and go
time warp
trapeze (with ferris wheel dismount)
eli hops (2)
planet hops (3)
drop in the bucket (flyaway dismount out of bucket)
snap start (to full wind)
shoot the moon (4 reps)
green triangle (any variation)
cold fusion
kwyjibo

In the event of a tie, 1st place will be decided by a head-to-head, sudden death Loop-Off, with the competitor performing the most inside loops winning. (You may choose a new yo-yo for the tie-breaker.)

What's the schedule?
Although it's subject to change, it's looking like this:
10-11am: registration
11-1130am: sport ladder
1130-12pm: fixed axle contest/beginner contest
12pm-1pm: lunch break
1pm-230pm: 1a freestyles
230pm-330pm: open freestyles
330pm-400pm: awards

Who's going to be judging the event?
So far, Randy Jansen has signed on to judge, as well as Mark Allen (both of team WERRD). Ed Haponik (of SPYY) will also be judging. Samm Scott of the Hspin Network will be judging ladder. More news on judges as it develops.

Will there be yo-yo's for sale?
At this point, no yo-yo's will be for sale at the venue, itself. However, the fine gentlemen from Yoyoguy.com ARE planning to attend, and will have product for sale afterward.

What's the price for the event?
The event will cost $10 per competitor ($5 for beginner division). There is NO CHARGE for spectators, but should you wish to visit the museum, which is awesome for kids 2-10, you'll need to pay admission at the front desk.

ATTENTION NC Yo-Yoers!!!

hey. this is the new blog space for north carolina yo-yo events.

thought you might like to know... the nc yo-yo crew (such as it is) will be holding ongoing meets in Davidson, NC on Sundays from 3-5pm. the lake norman area juggling group has been good enough to invite us to share their venue.

when it's nice out, we meet in the davidson village green (outdoors - directly across the street from summit coffee on s. main st.).
when it's cold and/or rainy, we meet in the student union on davidson college's campus (right next to the football stadium - just walk right in any of the doors like you own the place. we play yo-yo and juggle in the big open space on the main floor next to the theater).

a few years ago, we had an AWESOME crew going in raleigh-durham. people moved and it kind of faded away... if you play yo-yo, and have the capacity to get to davidson (just north of charlotte) - even just occasionally - we really can get that kind of scene back!

2009 NC State Yo-Yo Contest

The 3rd annual 2009 North Carolina State Yo-Yo Contest will be held on June 6th, 2009 at River Park North in lovely Greenville, North Carolina.

What are you talking about?
I'm talking about the biggest yo-yo event in the Carolinas! Yo-Yo players of all levels will be learning tons and having a great time at this event!

Where and when, exactly?

Who's running it?
The contest organizer this year is Chris Hicks. Ed Haponik is handling the sponsorship/sanctioning/judging details. (e-mail ed at kinopah@att.net )

Who's sponsoring it?
So far, Yoyonation.com, Yoyoguy.com, yoyoeXpert.com, YoyoFactory, Chaz Pads, Eric Wolff, Saturn Precision YoYo's, OneDrop Yo-Yo's, Yoyojam, and Caribou Lodge YoYo Works have committed to sponsor the event. LOTS more are in the works.

There will also be a fixed axle contest for all the "old-schoolers".
We'll also have freestyles in both "1A" and "Open" divisions. These will be judged on the criteria of positive trick elements, negative misses, and performance.
HUGE CHANGE: The NC State Champion this year will be determined by a composite score using performance in the 1a, Open, AND Sport Ladder divisions. There WILL be winners in each separate division, and you don't HAVE to enter all 3, but if you live in NC and want to be state champ, it's probably a good idea. Chris arrived at this decision in effort to promote well-rounded play, and to involve as many NC players as possible in the run for the title.
We'll also have an informal head-to-head "pink-slip best trick" contest at a dinner following the event. bring yo-yo's to lose! ;)
Since it's National Yo-Yo Day, we will ALSO be holding a raffle to benefit the North Carolina Children's Hospital. We'll be raffling 2 prizes" a mint-in-package, limited/numbered "Stars & Stripes" John Higby-painted Duncan Freehand zero AND a very rare, very large commemorative Duncan Man patch. $5 raffle tickets will be available at registration, and the drawing will be at the end of the event.

YES! This has changed! Since we'll have a separate Beginner division, we've decided to allow ANYONE to participate in ladder.

How about the fixed axle contest?
Yes. Anyone can do that, but you need a fixed axle yo-yo. The fixed axle division will be a different type of ladder, composed of 12 classic and modern 0a (looping)/1a (sleeping) tricks. Missing tricks will not "knock you out". The winner will simply be the person who completes the highest percentage of tricks. A simple long sleeper contest will be used to break a tie to determine the winner. The tricks are as follows:
